The North Hills is the band of suburbs north of the Allegheny River along McKnight Road, Route 19, Perry Highway and I-279: Ross Township and West View closest to the city, McCandless and the Town of McCandless around North Park and the Ross Park Mall area, then Franklin Park, Wexford and Cranberry Township toward the Butler County line.
Housing changes as you drive north. Ross and West View have 1940s and 1950s brick ranches and Cape Cods with plaster walls and smaller rooms. McCandless and Franklin Park add 1970s to 1990s colonials and split-levels with family rooms and fireplaces. Wexford and Cranberry are dominated by newer construction with open floor plans, two-story great rooms, and finished basements built for large screens and in-wall wiring.
